The Gift of Oil

We have a passion for quality oil & vinegar!

The name of the company itself comes from Greek mythology - legend has it that there was a contest set by Zeus, the God of the Gods, for control of the important territory of Attica. He decreed Attica would go to the God who could offer the people the greatest gift and that forevermore the city would bear the victor's name. Zeus invited Athene and Poseidon to compete. Poseidon struck the rock of the Acropolis with his trident and a mighty salt water spring exploded from the earth.

Zeus, impressed by Poseidon's offering, asked Athene for hers. With all of her strength, she slammed her spear into the foundations of the Acropolis and a beautiful olive tree rose from the crack created. She announced that this new-to-the-world wondrous tree would provide the people with a source of nutritional and healthy food, fuel for illumination and medicine for soothing and healing. Zeus accepted “the gift of oil” on behalf of the people from Athene and from her Athens took its name. The Athenians in gratitude built a beautiful temple to Athene on the hill of the Acropolis and called it the Parthenon.
